Amanda Vail brings over 15 years’ experience in writing, editing, and communications, alongside years of nonprofit work, to everything they do. As a creative freelancer, Amanda worked with small businesses, nonprofits, corporations, and individual artists. Their focus is crafting compelling messaging that increases awareness and understanding while generating strong community connections. They’re an adept project manager and developmental editor, able to balance multiple stakeholders and goals while focusing on the steps needed to bring the project to completion. Amanda has served as board president of the Northwest Editors Guild, guest editor for Bleating Heart Press, and co-chair for the Puget Sound Grantwriters Association’s Funders Forum. They received their BFA in Art History from Macalester College and a Certificate in Editing from the University of Washington.

Selected Experience

Director of Communications, Plymouth Housing

Since joining Plymouth Housing as the sole communications person, Amanda has received two promotions and successfully advocated for the creation of a communications department with three full-time positions. Highlights from their time in this role include: initiating and executing an eighteen-month organization rebranding; implementing an entirely new, responsive website; managing the concept, branding, advertising, PR, and communications content for Plymouth Housing’s $75 million PROOF Capital Campaign; and swiftly ramping up internal communications and helping switch two major fundraisers from in-person to digital events in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Owner, Three Wrens

As the owner of Three Wrens, L.L.C., Amanda worked with a wide variety of clients to ensure their messages reached their audiences. They wrote and edited marketing and promotional content (both digital and print), wrote grant applications, and provided communications consulting. Clients included Deloitte Digital, Path with Art, Madison Valley Consultants, Bit Lab International, Far Fung Travel, the Celtic Arts Foundation, and more.

Editor, Bleating Heart Press

Amanda was one of the inaugural editors and project managers for Bleating Heart Press, an independent publisher based in Toronto, Canada. Amanda managed calls for submissions, edited work by writers from across the globe, supported crowdfunding campaigns, and coordinated print production.

Writer, Women Write About Comics

Women Write About Comics (WWAC) is an online magazine that covers pop culture through an intersectional lens. Amanda wrote and contributed to over 60 reviews and longform articles in addition to representing WWAC at comics conventions and panel discussions.

President of the Board, Northwest Editors Guild

Amanda served a two-year term on the board of the Northwest Editors Guild, including one year as Board President. During this time, Amanda led the board in solidifying roles and procedures, adopting a new visual brand identity, and deepening member services and engagement.

Critic and Editor, Visual Arts Critics Union of Minnesota

During their time with the Visual Arts Critics Union of Minnesota, Amanda edited the “V.A.C.U.M. Attachment” journal, coordinated a year-long series of arts lectures, served as an expert panelist, and presented to the general public.
